Exploring the major figures in the development of Zen Buddhism

Explore together the major figures in the development of Zen Buddhism beginning with the enlightenment stories of the first five ancestors after Bodhidharma and the founders of the five Houses of Zen. This is an opportunity to know our ancestors and our “family” history in more depth and to create an intimate relationship with them.

We will explore the biographies and teachings of some of the major figures in the development of early Chinese Ch’an (Zen) Buddhism through the T’ang Dynasty (618-907). The course will begin with the enlightenment stories of the first five Ancestors after Bodhidharma. Each month we will read translations from the Transmission of the Lamp and other great Zen compendiums containing the stories of these great figures in our tradition. We will include the founders of the five  Houses of Zen, appreciating the differences in their teaching styles.

This is a year-long course meeting once a month, the first Sunday of each month (fireside chat), beginning January 2, 2022.
