Everything you need to know about Zen is contained in the Heart Sutra.

Roshi Ma is giving a two session workshop on the Heart Sutra. This is a wisdom text in the Prajnaparamita, the perfection of wisdom, tradition embraced by all Zen Schools. It is a powerful condensation of core teachings on human nature, the nature of “reality,” and the path of awakening. This is a chance to look more deeply into a sacred text essential to the Zen tradition and to our practice.

When chanting the Heart Sutra, is the deeper meaning of the words really in your mind? Everything you need to know about Zen is contained in the Heart Sutra. We will delve into this time-honored sutra, whose wisdom continues to ring true whenever it is read or chanted.

In this class, we will walk through the sutra line by line and come to know its richness that ripens through the years. Our text is a fresh and sometimes tongue-in-cheek humorous approach to exploring the Heart Sutra. The goal of this class is to further our appreciation of this remarkable text. “The radical message of the Heart Sutra, one of Buddhism’s most famous texts, is a sweeping attack on everything we hold most dear: our troubles, the world as we know it, even the teachings of the Buddha himself. Several of the Buddha’s followers are said to have suffered heart attacks and died when they first heard of its assertion of the basic groundlessness of our existence.”
(from the book, The Heart Attack Sutra)
