Dokusan, is private, personal time and dialogue with one of our Zen Teachers. This is your time to ask questions, present an understanding, or share something personal. Dialogues in dokusan center on practice and how to relate practice to our daily lives. Zen is about relationship, our ability to connect with ourselves, others, nature, and all creation. The relationship with a Teacher involves mutual openness, honesty, respect and care. The relationship also requires communication and mutual learning.
Dokusan is offered during most zazen sessions and can also be scheduled individually. During that time you can discuss your individual study, do your koan work or discuss personal matters concerning your spiritual practice. The sessions are short, 5 to 15 minutes. Periodically, longer meetings are scheduled between teacher and student for longer discussions. Teaching also occurs through public talks and group discussions, classes and workshops.
