INNER RELATIONSHIP FOCUSING LEVEL 4
Teacher: Jocelyn Jacks Kahn, IRF Trainer & Guide, Certified by The Focusing Institute
Cost: $120/members – $185/non-members (Note: We will use the same manual we used for Level 3: The Focusing Student’s and Companion’s Manual, Part Two, by Barbara McGavin and Ann Weiser Cornell)
Here’s what happens in Focusing Level 4:
In Level 4, you begin fine-tuning and trouble-shooting your skills as Companion and Focuser.
- You learn why certain types of issues – e.g., Focusing with your “Critic,” or action blocks (when you desperately want to do something – and then don’t) – are particularly difficult, and how to effectively Focus with them.
- You learn how to discover and work with hidden, exiled parts that are powerfully affecting your life for the worse, but that you are no longer even aware of.
- You’ve learned a lot – and now you become more comfortable relaxing into the process and trusting your growing intuition about how to accompany a Focusing process.
- You begin truly settling into the foundational principle of Inner Relationship Focusing: The radical acceptance of everything you encounter in your inner world.
Class Structure
Level 4 class structure is a little different from that of the previous levels. Classes are still 2-1/2 hours each. They still consist of some combination of guided or experiential exercises, lectures, plenty of time for questions, demonstrations. There will still be between-class exchanges with your Focusing partner.
However, rather than have in-class practice sessions, two students will volunteer to be observed as they Focus together. Don’t run away! ;-D As usual, you will have the option to pass on this opportunity if you like. Do note, though, that the learning that happens really is powerful – for you as well as the class!
Classes are recorded so you can listen later if desired. There are only five sessions, and each one is chock-full of learning! Therefore, each student is allowed only one absence if he or she wishes to proceed to the next level.

There are four levels of Focusing:
- Level 1: The goal of Level 1 is to give you the basics of Focusing and the ability to Focus in a peer partnership. Even if you go no further, you will have the invaluable tools of skillful reflecting and of presence language.
- Level 2: The emphasis here is on increasing and fine-tuning your skills in being a nurturing companion to the Focusing process, whether to another person’s or to your own. You will have a thorough basic grounding in peer partnership Focusing once you have completed this level.
- Level 3: This workshop introduces you to the ability to guide your partner (at their request) – and yourself – gracefully through each stage of the Focusing process within the context of a peer partnership.
- Level 4: You extend your peer partnership Focusing skills to being able to facilitate the Focusing process when it seems to be blocked. You experience the IRF principle of the Radical Acceptance of Everything within your inner world!
