INNER RELATIONSHIP FOCUSING LEVEL 3
Teacher: Jocelyn Jacks Kahn, IRF Trainer & Guide, Certified by The Focusing Institute
Cost: $250 (non-ZG members); $200 (ZG Members)
(Includes the manual for the class: The Focusing Student’s and Companion’s Manual, Part Two, by Barbara McGavin & Ann Weiser Cornell)
Here’s what happens in Focusing Level 3:
At last! You get to give suggestions (also known as “reminders”)! (Although you can’t forget that the Focuser is still in charge of their own session…)
- Within the context of a peer partnership Focusing exchange, you will learn how to guide your partner – and yourself – through each stage of the Focusing process.
- You’ll learn the typical “shape” of a Focusing session, and what steps are more likely to facilitate the session at a particular stage.
- You’ll learn how to guide the beginning of the session so it’s more likely to go well, and how to guide the ending so it’s gradual, honoring the fullness of the session, and not abrupt.
- You’ll learn what reminders to give when two or more parts come.
- You’ll learn what to do if your reminder doesn’t help.
- You’ll learn more about what to do when positive feelings come.
Structure of Weekly Class Format
Classes are 2-1/2 hours each. They consist of some combination of guided or experiential exercises, lectures, plenty of time for questions, demonstrations, and one-to-one practice with other students in peer partnership Focusing sessions. In between classes, assigned pairs of students practice the aspects of Focusing that we learned in the previous class.
Classes are recorded so students can listen later if desired. There are only five sessions, and each one is chock-full of learning! Therefore, each student is allowed only one absence from the five formal classes if he or she wishes to proceed to the next level.
In addition to the formal classes during the five-week period, there are assigned Focusing partnerships between Level 3 and Level 4. There is also a message board students can use to ask questions that may be of interest to the whole group.
Students can also e-mail, call or Skype the instructor during this period between the formal class sessions with any questions or comments that may have come up for them.
Structure of Weekend Workshop+ Format
The training described above are presented over the course of a weekend, from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. each day.
Included in the weekend workshop format are assigned Focusing partnerships and readings from the manual during the following five weeks to give you a chance to practice and reinforce what you have learned. A partnership involves each student in the pair taking turns being Focuser and being Companion to their partner. Each person takes a 25-minute turn as the Focuser, while the other student serves as Companion.
Also, each week I expect students to contact me via phone and e-mail with any questions that come up. I will send out a brief post or video discussing the questions that have come up among students (since an individual’s difficulties with the process usually reflect other students’ difficulties as well).
In addition, I will supervise one of your 15-minute telephone Focusing partnership session during the Partnership Weeks. (You can choose which week.)
There will also be a message board through which students can communicate (both to me and fellow students) questions, difficulties – and the surprising and wonderful experiences that come frequently in Focusing!
