INNER RELATIONSHIP FOCUSING LEVEL I
Optional Prerequisite: Pre-class Guided Focusing Session with Instructor*
—————
*Additional Fee of $75 (Student is only eligible for the discounted $75 if he or she has already submitted a deposit or full payment for the course.)
Instructor: Jocelyn Jacks Kahn, IRF Focusing Trainer & Guide, Certified by the Focusing Institute
Here’s what happens in Focusing Level One:
- You learn the remarkable ability to be in Presence with your feelings rather than ping-ponging between reacting from those feelings or suppressing them.
- You learn how to access the rich personal wisdom held in your own body.
- You learn to combine these two crucial skills into a powerful process that catalyzes inner transformation.
- You become more trusting of yourself and your inner wisdom.
- You learn how to provide peer support to someone else as they facilitate their own process.
- Although this work is done with a companion, you can express your feelings and process without revealing its content to your companion if you wish. Personal boundaries are a crucial part of the Focusing process.
IMPORTANT! Optional Prerequisite:
If you have no experience with Inner Relationship Focusing, an individual Inner Relationship Focusing session with Jocelyn before the first class meeting is highly recommended. There is an additional discounted fee of $75 for this session. You can pay on line or with a check. If you choose a phone session, you must pay in advance of the session. If you have an in-person session, you can pay when you come to the session. (In-person sessions are held in Hawthorne, New Jersey.) If you indicate on your Registration form that you would like a First Focusing Individual Guided Session, Jocelyn will contact you to arrange a date and time. (Please note that you are eligible for the $75 fee only if you have already paid your deposit or full payment for the class. Otherwise, Jocelyn’s normal fees apply. If you have a guided session with Jocelyn within a month of registering for the class, you are eligible for a refund of the difference in fees upon submitting payment for the class.)
CLASS STRUCTURE
Five-Class Weekly Format (In-person and telephone classes). There are five weekly classes that are 2-1/2 hours each. They consist of some combination of guided or experiential exercises, lectures, plenty of time for questions, demonstrations, and one-to-one practice with other students in peer partnership Focusing sessions. In between classes, assigned pairs of students practice the aspects of Focusing that we learned in the previous class.
Classes are recorded so students can listen later if desired. There are only five sessions, and each one is chock-full of learning! Therefore, each student is allowed only one absence from the five formal classes if he or she wishes to proceed to the next level.
In addition to the formal classes during the five-week period, there are assigned Focusing partnerships between Level 1 and Level 2. There is also a message board students can use to ask questions that may be of interest to the whole group. Students can also e-mail, call or Skype the instructor during this period between the formal class sessions with any questions or comments that may come up for them.
Weekend Workshop Format. The five class sessions as described above are presented over the course of a weekend, from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. each day.
The potential problem: There is quite a lot to fully absorb in two days. Although what you will learn is not difficult, it will likely be completely opposite to your normal way of relating to your experience. It takes practice over time to develop new instincts!
The solution: Included in the weekend workshop format are assigned Focusing partnerships and readings from the manual during the five weeks following the weekend to give you a chance to practice and reinforce what you have learned. A partnership involves each student in the pair taking turns being Focuser and being Companion to their partner. Each turn ranges from 10 minutes (during the first week) to 25 minutes (during the last week).
Also, each week I expect students to contact me via phone and e-mail with any questions that come up. I will send out a brief audio or video discussing the questions that have come up among students (since an individual’s difficulties with the process usually reflect other students’ difficulties as well).
In addition, I will supervise one of your 15-minute telephone Focusing partnership session during the Partnership Weeks. (You can choose which week.)
There will also be a message board through which students can communicate (both to me and fellow students) questions, difficulties – and the surprising and wonderful experiences that come frequently in Focusing!
