Best wishes to Toryu, on her Shusso Hossen. I wish I could participate, but I am already there in spirit, casting my line of thought into the rippled pond of our local temple. Reel me in at the upcoming retreat though please!: I am soaked and submerged under my own vines and brambles. Am I under the pond or over it? Does the lotus even care? What would it mean to bloom above the water line, or stay submerged? Help me answer these questions?

The ocean was warm for Montauk. The fisherman concurred and is worried about the oil flowing in the Gulf even this far east. Since he saw the bluefish already he says the storms are coming; there is no coolness to hold them back. The fisherman is heading to the Adirondack mountains when this happens.

With no where to sit
instead I did
Kinhin in Montauk:

Step by step one breath
see water runs to water
over wavy sand.

I am reminded of an encounter between the Governor of New York and Vermont. They were standing on the shore of Lake Champlain in Burlington Vermont gazing across the waters at the beautiful Adirondack Mountains. The Governor of New York said, "Those are OUR mountains!. The governor of Vermont said, "Yes, but it's OUR view."

So ... Answer me quickly - are we Vermont or New York!

Yes! And even with the flowing of this water, I'm reminded of a poem by Stonehouse who grabs his staff and says, "You still can't leave here." So as I settle into my new townhome, I remember to water the living room plant, the annuals in the flower box over my stone buddha, and to take a much needed shower. But as I step out--water flowing into water--I also recall the stained ring around the toilet, the dishes soaking in the sink, and the request of an old neighbor asking me to help her with her leaky faucet. It is hot and humid today, and I'd rather put certain things off until tomorrow. But, once again, beads of sweat roll down my face and I realize I am fully immersed in the vapor of this particular time and place--water flowing into water--so that there's just the stepping out and diving in.
